Sir Wyce and Cot make their escape, but as they rush into the forest on horseback three figures approach from the burning city. One of them appears to be Mrs. Grooter, Cot's caretaker, who rarely spares a thought for anyone other than herself. Perhaps she is under duress to help the men, though perhaps not very much, as she would always want to see Cot taken away from her otherwise orderly home. "There they are!" She points to Cot and Sir Wyce as they flee. "I told you!"

She is flanked by men with swords, unscrupulous men. One allows his lips to curl into a smile as he recognizes his prey. They start to run after the man and the boy, swords drawn, as Sir Wyce urges his horse to pick up speed. They rush headlong into the forest, not looking back, running as fast as they can into the night.
